I am glad to be back into the swing of things after Christmas. Today I started teaching fraction from a unit I created. I am very happy with it! My class seems excited too. I used to use text books and programs, but after teaching a while I started creating my own materials. I felt/feel like I can get my point across to the children through my own materials. This how I became a seller on TPT. A coworker of mine insisted I start up a store. I did and now I am addicted, but anyway.... I digress so I am told!
I started my new fraction unit today. I am excited about it! It is like my first full piece or book if you will. I believe I will make it a part of a book and let this unit be one chapter. Here is how I am using it.
- It has a student journal. This is really a note taking/interactive lesson template. (A guide for the teacher too! It is all sequenced and planned out!)
- It includes a daily math writing prompt about fractions!
- It instructs and provides practice.
- After the lesson, the unit supplies a classwork sheet for practice and a correlating homework sheet in the exact template of the classwork. This way students are confident as they do their homework. They've seen it before!
- The next day, you can go over the homework and classwork if needed. After each homework sheet, there is a quiz! It is also in the exact same format as the classwork and homework. Why? This encourages mastery and confidence. Remember- many people are lacking confidence when it comes to fractions. Even adults complain about them.
Here is a pic of today's lesson!

Oh Lord, Jesus... I pray for patience. December 15th, 2013
It is the week before Christmas break. All teachers every where are having to brace themselves for a week of CRAZY. Christmas parties, cookies, gifts, and rooms filled with giddy children can wear a teacher plum out!
This week think of teacher! We all think about UPS and the mail carriers at Christmas, but how often to you think about teachers. We are in the "hot zone."
To all teachers out there- Stay strong! You are almost there!
Which is worse? December 10, 2013
Today I was trying to get me class to media. They are pokey when I need them to hurry... and rush when I need them to slow down. (Typical kids!)
I was rushing them out the door so I can visit the little girls' room! I told them, "Move it, I need to use the restroom!" I thought they might be sympathetic, but instead one of my students said, "TMI Mrs. Bown!"
I was speechless! What is worse- the fact that one of my students think I gave too much information or the fact that I actually understood what she was talking about?
Kids! I love my job even when making a trip the the ladies' room is a challenge.
How to make hyperlinks on your TPT site! December 8, 2013
Thanks to the TPT Seller's Forum, I was able to learn how to make hyperlinks to my other products on each product page. I just did it! I am not a computer gooroo by any means, but I was able to do it.
Here is all you really need to do!
<a href="pasteyourwebsiteherewithoutanyspacesitneedstoincludethehtttp://www.stufftoo">Type the Title of Your Link Here and You can Add Spaces</a>
Just put this code into your product page and Wa La.... you have a hyperlink to another product! I just did it (literally minutes ago) so I haven't seen any spikes in sales, but according the the seller's forum it will help!
Kill 3 birds with one stone.
- Integrate technology, Common Core ELA standards, and Science/Social Studies
- I create units that incorporate all of the above
- Some of my units are published and for sale on TPT.
- Using Google in the classroom is wonderful!
- How do I do it?
- Check out some of the ways I use it. I will let the pictures to the talking! If you have any questions, post them. I will be glad to answer!

| One SWEET Map! |
- This is a NC map. Yes, it is a map. The children in my class just completed a mini-unit on NC Geography. ( I will have the unit up on TPT before long.) The children had to create a map on paper prior to creating their cookie maps.
After we completed our maps, I took digital photos with my Ipad. I shared the pictures on Google Docs. All of my kiddos have an account. I showed them how to add a text box and write inside the text box. Not only did I earn, "Best Teacher Ever" on my list of compliments this year, but we learned applied geography, shared treats, and learned some new technology.
